What to expect in Lamalera Traditional Whaling village.

On the rugged southern coast of Lembata Island in East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia, lies the village of Lamalera. This is not an ordinary fishing village; it is a place where time seems to have stood still, and the ancient tradition of subsistence whaling is still practiced today.

The people of Lamalera believe their whaling practices are a sacred heritage from their ancestors, possibly originating from their migration from the small island of Lepan Batan. For centuries, the villagers have relied on the sea for their survival, particularly the migrating sperm whales (known locally as koteklema), manta rays, and dolphins

The whaling season typically runs from May to September,, with its peak in July. When a whale is spotted, the alarm is raised, and hunters rush to their peledang, traditional wooden boats built by hand. The hunters are led by a Lamafa, the harpooner who takes the most dangerous position at the bow of the boat.Unlike modern commercial whaling, the Lamalera people use traditional tools—bamboo harpoons—to hunt,, reflecting their respect for the sea and their need for survival rather than profit

Despite living in a modern world, the predominantly Catholic community of Lamalera blends their faith with traditional rituals. Before the hunting season begins, a Lewa mass is held,, praying for a safe and successful expedition. The villagers view the sperm whale as a "gift from God" and share the catch with the entire village—widows, elderly, and children included. Nothing is wasted. This subsistence hunting is considered unique and is exempt from international whaling bans because it is not for commercial purposes.

The life of the Lamalera people is a delicate balance of danger, tradition, and survival. As the world changes, these hunters continue to risk their lives to preserve their cultural identity and feed their community, living on the edge of the world.
